PURPOSE:

Provides financial and bookkeeping activities by the Council.  The focus of the position is accurate, timely and efficient processing of the financial matters of the Council in conjunction with the accountants retained by the Council.  Coordinates benefits for Council 4 employees.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:        

Performs tasks independently, works under the limited supervision of the Director or the Executive Director.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

Has lead responsibility over bookkeeping staff.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Accounts Payable/Receivable:  Invoices, Expenses and Per Capita taxes
  • Payroll:  Calculated and creates payroll, electronic submission, and revise payroll as appropriate.  Responds to deferred income inquiries, prepares reports and loan applications.
  • State & Federal Quarterly & Annual Tax Filings
  • Central Dues Collection
  • Employee Benefits:  coordinates information, initiation and revision of individual employee’s benefits (health, life, pension, credit union and deferred income)
  • Researches and assists Council 4 employees in resolving insurance-related problems.
  • Account Maintenance on various bank accounts (Trust Account, Working Account, PAC Account, Solidarity Account, Building Corp., smith Barney and other investment accounts)
  • Political action reports (calculation and compilation of data)
  • Political action record oversight and maintenance
  • Sales & Use Tax quarterly reporting; annual Sales & Use annual report
  • Tax Related Compilations:  e.g., annual property tax, data for accountants
  • Coordinates conferences and conventions, maintains yellow pages advertising and postage meter.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma and seven years of bookkeeping or accounting in a responsible position.  Education beyond high school may be substituted for the experience requirement of the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:

Strong computer skills essential, including accounting and bookkeeping software and spreadsheets.  Ability to coordinate and compile high volume of material in a timely and effective manner.  Ability to identify and apply complex statues related to the union’s financial activities.  Proficient in math skills needed for bookkeeping. Ability to research and apply employee benefits coverage.
